Ricoh Develops Technology for 8-Layer 200GB Optical Disc
December 02, 2005
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun recently reported that Ricoh has developed a technology with which a 200GB optical disc with eight recording layers can be produced. The company expects commercialization of the new disc, which would be able to store 18 hours of high-definition television programming, to happen in 2008. Current DVDs only have one layer and have a capacity of 4.7GB, while next-generation DVDs such as Blu-ray and HD DVD have two layers. At the moment, manufacturing optical discs with more than two layers is not possible, as more than two layers normally leads to interference in reading the disc due to light reflected by the different layers. Ricoh's newly developed technology avoids this from happening by using a special glass plate developed by Photonic Lattice, which filters out the reflecting light. The optical disc using the new technology will be compatible with both the Blu-ray format and the HD DVD format. Ricoh exited the DVD drive market in 2004 due to fierce price competition, but the company plans to return to the market with devices using the new technology.
